Christian Authors Showcase Queensland. A Weekend Well Spent
Share
Written by Justine. Publisher at Grace Bell Publishing
Over the May long weekend, I had the opportunity to attend the Christian Authors Showcase Queensland, held in Brisbane.
Around sixty people gathered across Saturday and Sunday, united by a shared heart for God and a love of faith-based books. It was a lovely mix of authors, editors, publishers, illustrators and creatives.
The atmosphere was genuinely encouraging. It was two days of learning sessions, pop-ups, book launches and yummy food breaks. There was a real sense of community, with people cheering each other on, sharing ideas, and just enjoying time together.
I thoroughly liked meeting new people, making friends, and having lots of laughs along the way.
One of the highlights was hearing from Rochelle Stephens, who was the keynote speaker. Her insights into publishing were both practical and encouraging, especially for those writing in this space in Australia. (SIDE NOTE: I have the privilege of publishing Rochelle's new picture book, How to Wait For Christmas, which is due out in September this year)
Another standout feature was the pop-up bookstall. There were several tables filled with books, and I could have happily spent hours looking at books. I love books!
I spoke on the publisher panel on Sunday afternoon, with Rochelle and Anne Hamilton. That was fun. I admit that I love microphones.
A Few Takeaways
There were many helpful sessions, but here are my key takeaway points:
- Support other authors.
- Do not rush to submit.
- Know your target audience.
Final Thoughts
It was a great weekend of learning, encouragement, and lots of JOY. Events like this are a good reminder that writing can sometimes feel solitary, but we are not doing it alone. There are cool and interesting people creating and sharing stories of faith all across the country, and it is a joy to be part of that.
