The Other Side of Manuscript Submissions - Thoughts at Grace Bell Publishing
Share
At Grace Bell Publishing, we publish wholesome, fun, and hope-filled fiction for kids, teens, and families.
Later this year, GBP will be opening to submissions (hopefully!), so I thought I would take some time now to share what I consider when I receive a manuscript.
When I look at a manuscript submission, these are some of the key things I consider:
- Is the story well written?
- Is there a clear hook?
- Does the concept feel fresh and unique?
- What does the current market look like? Is there already something very similar being published?
- Do I love it? Would I personally buy it, and would the target audience likely buy it too?
- Is there strong commercial potential? Could this sell in high volume?
- Does it fit the Grace Bell Publishing brand and publishing list?
I’m definitely looking for stories that feel special. I love stories with heart, hope, humour, warmth, and strong commercial appeal, while aligning with the vision of Grace Bell Publishing.
I also know there are many wonderful stories that may not be the right fit for us, and that’s completely okay. Every publisher has a unique vision and publishing direction, and this is simply ours.
I hope that sharing this post, it provides a small glimpse into the decision-making process and what I’m looking for in a submission.
