From the Publisher: My Manuscript Wish List (Part 3) – Teen Fiction

This is Part 3 of the MSWL Blog series. Today, I thought I would focus on another area that I'm particularly excited about: teen fiction.

At Grace Bell Publishing, we already have a contemporary teen fiction series underway (which I am REALLY EXCITED about!), so at this stage I am less likely to acquire another contemporary series. That doesn't mean I won't consider contemporary submissions, but right now I am especially interested in other areas of the teen fiction market.

One thing I would love to see more of is teen fiction written as a series rather than a standalone novel. I enjoy stories that allow readers to spend time with characters across multiple books and become invested in their journeys over the long term.

Some genres that particularly interest me include:

  • Historical fiction (I'm especially keen on this genre)
  • Fantasy (no magic)
  • Sports fiction
  • Adventure stories
  • Fresh concepts with a strong hook

I am not particularly concerned about word count. I care far more about a great story than hitting a specific number.

Broadly speaking, I'm looking for stories that align with the Grace Bell Publishing brand. I'm drawn to compelling plots, strong friendships, personal growth, adventure, humour, teamwork, and stories that leave readers feeling encouraged after they turn the final page.

I love authentic teenage characters facing genuine challenges, but I'm generally less interested in stories that rely heavily on darkness, trauma, violence, or a strong focus on romance to create tension. There can be romance but I would prefer low to no spice.

When it comes to fantasy, I'm particularly drawn to journey based adventures, and a strong sense of wonder. I'm less interested in battle heavy fantasy (although LOTR is amazing!) and I am not keen on magic.

Across all genres, I'm generally drawn to low to medium stakes stories. I want books that entertain, inspire, and immerse readers in a great story while still offering hope and light along the way. And yes, I love tropes. Tropes are welcome. Readers love them for a reason, and I do too. I also love morals and positive values shown in fiction.

Looking further ahead, I am hoping to develop another studio led teen fiction series in the future, most likely in the historical fiction space (I have a specific time period in mind). If that sounds like something you would enjoy working on, please mention your interest when submissions reopen in the future.

As always, this wish list is not intended to discourage submissions that fall outside these categories. It is simply a snapshot of the types of projects I'm especially excited about right now.

Most of all, I'm looking for great stories with heart that entertain readers, spark their imagination, and leave them with a sense of hope.
